Stiffening of the upper soft palate by palatal
implants is thought to reduce or, in some cases, stop snoring altogether.
Another technique approved for habitual snoring is radio frequency tissue
ablation (RFTA). This involves stiffening and shrinking the soft palate
tissue and uvula using low power radio frequency energy. The procedure can
be performed as an out-patient, taking an average of 30 minutes. Radio
frequency ablation is not a laser technique so it is less painfull.
A repeat of this procedure may be needed depending on the severity of the snoring and response to treatment.

In a randomized controlled trial a Swiss research team studied subjects who suffered from snoring or moderate obstructive sleep apnea. Their aim was to scientifically evaluate the effect of didgeridoo playing on these conditions. The study group were taught circular breathing (the technique essential for playing the didgeridoo) and practiced for 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week over a 4 month period. Significant improvements were noted, in both nocturnal disturbances and day time tiredness. The researchers felt it was the training of the upper airways brought about by circular breathing techniques that caused the improvements 4. |
