Snoring Myth

Despite being a nuisance, snoring is harmless.

For some snoring is harmless, for others it is a sign of obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep apnea can damage your health and is characterized by snoring, delayed breaths sometimes accompanied by a gasp and daytime fatigue.

Many people with previously undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnea present with daytime fatigue. The suggestion that snoring could be leading to daytime tiredness can be a surprise, particularly if sufferers live alone and were blissfully unaware of the noises. If you get any of these symptoms please consult your doctor.

Alcohol aids a good nights sleep.

Alcohol
is not a suitable sedative. Apart from increasing your chances of snoring, alcohol prevents you from getting the deep sleep required to wake up bright and fresh. So despite having a sedating effect, alcohol will not give you quality sleep.

Older people need less sleep.

The optimum amount of sleep for most adults is thought to be between seven and eight hours
5. Older adults generally sleep for shorter periods and often get up earlier, but their sleep requirements are that of an average adult.
